Planting forests in the desert

Soil exploitation threatens to desertify territories of an extension bigger than the size of Europe. Fertile and productive soils are losing their potential and being degraded; the planet is transforming gradually into a vast desert.

But some people are addressing the problem by making large oasification campaigns, which consist of reversing the process by introducing ground cover species that are able to survive the adverse environmental conditions of deserts.

South of Israel, in the Negev Desert -which occupies more than half of the country- Yatir Forest stands, a forest that began to exist 50 years ago with a single tree and which today comprises the conquest of 30 square kilometers of green land. Four million trees stop the advancing desert and around it flourish villages where humans are gaining ground.

Attracted by vegetation, clouds discharge their waters over regions where there used to be no rain at all. The shade cast by trees reduces evaporation and only then can germinate fruits and all kinds of food, medicinal and textile plants. Plants counteract the greenhouse effect and regulate the level of carbon of the atmosphere. Desert agriculture can be practiced, and populations thrive in an environment where life is possible through a fertile land.

The population of the world is increasing and the space where humans can live is becoming too small. Oasification plans and the expansion of plantations should become a global priority. Arid areas of greenery can be recovered and repopulated. By covering only a third of the surface of our planet with forests, many of our problems would be strongly reduced or they could simply disappear.

Each tree counts. Planting a tree is being part of the task of making our world habitable.
