No podemos permitírnoslo.

The Water Forest

Near Mexico DF and extending to the cities of Cuernavaca and Toluca, you begin to see the urban patches that are ruining one of the most impressive forests in the planet. Despite hosting 2% of global biodiversity, the Water Forest has been forgotten by the inhabitants who ignore that its water reserves are responsible for supplying their cities.

80% of these 120,000 hectares of water, greenery and unique species, have been qualified by relevant studies as a high quality hydrological area. Besides, water sources are responsible for nurturing two of the most important rivers of the country: the Lerma River and the Balsas River.

The irrepressible urban sprawl of Mexico DF has been colonizing the forest with a daily hectare for the last 50 years. After decades of neglect, the Water Forest has been losing about 3,000 hectares per year, which is equivalent to ten football fields a day.

We also added other problems like deforestation, mining excavation, forest fires, the spread of agricultural crops and the conquest of land by livestock industry. But the worst threat is the project of dividing the Water Forest with the construction of a highway.

Eventually, this project will ruin biodiversity and the habitat of endangered species. On the side of the highway settlements will grow, and in a rapid pace the forest could disappear in a few years.

We cannot afford to lose this green haven. A key task to safeguard the Water Forest consists in promulgating knowledge about the richness of this amazing region. We are not yet aware of the ecological importance of the Water Forest. The extinction of this ecosystem would represent an irreparable loss for the whole world.
