Acuafobia

Aqua-phobia

Aqua-phobia is a pattern specifically linked to fear because, as oddly unnatural as it seems, some people experience an incomprehensible horror towards water. Do not confuse it with hydrophobia, which is the disease suffered by those who were bitten by a rabid animal.

To some people just thinking about water is enough to feel that inexplicable and irrational fear, others are afraid to watch the waves or the current of a river, and there are certainly those trying to stay dry in the rain, not punctuated by any source of water, avoiding any kind of physical contact.

Even knowing that water poses no threat, or trained in the art of swimming, or being someone with a past of an expert sailor, those who are affected by this disorder are unable to tolerate a healthy relationship with water.

The trauma is generated from concrete experiences, such as the case of one who came close to drowning, or someone who was the victim of a shipwreck or saw the death of a loved one in the middle of the water. In another context, the phobia can develop from cultural factors, as happens with people who are faced with the immensity of the sea and who were raised in particular desertic territories.

In any case, phobia leads these people to instinctive and uncontrollable reactions: tremors, anxiety, feeling cold, excessive sweating, increased heart rate, and aggressiveness in the worst case scenario.

Despite this there are treatments that help patients understand the origin of this phobia and thus acquire new behaviors that allow them to confront their fears.

Being a vital and essential element, aquaphobia breaks the logic of the species: loving water as the most precious thing in our lives.
